Suken Test Outline

There are 10 levels (called Kyus) ranging from the 1st Kyu (university level) to the 8th Kyu (elementary school 4th year level).
The 1st to 5th Kyu tests are each divided into two parts, Section 1 and Section 2. Section 1 is a calculation test and Section 2 is an application test. Those who pass both sections will be awarded the certificate.
The 6th to 8th Kyu tests have only one section. In Section 2 for the 1st to 2nd Kyu, there are required problems, which must all be answered, and 5 selective problems from which examinees can choose from. The number of selective problems to answer is designated for each test. Some of the content of neighboring Kyus overlap to avoid large jumps in levels.
